Self care is an important part of all our lives. It helps us maintain overall health and improves our quality of living. Even now most of us feel that taking care of ourselves is selfish, but it is time we realise that it is alright to give priority to ourselves, especially when it comes to our health.

Self care can come in different forms. It is unique to each person. Different communities and cultures may consider certain self care practices to be more effective and relatable than others. If you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, you may have realised that there are certain self care practices that are more suited for the experiences of the community. These practices may have a huge impact in promoting personal growth and mental health.

Let’s look at some self care practices that are more specific for the LGBTQ+ community

  • Unfollowing social media pages or news outlets that may be toxic or harmful to your mental health can help you avoid negative information and the emotions and distress that come with such information. Instead, follow pages and news outlets that celebrate self expression and the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Expressing yourself based on your comfort level and confidence. You can find different outlets to express yourself such as art, music, fashion, words etc.
  • Watch movies, TV shows or read books that are inclusive and normalise LGBTQ+ lives.
  • Joining LGBTQ+ support groups can help you meet more people and make new friends; this can also help you increase your support system.
  • Remember that you’re not alone. Reach out to your support system when you’re distressed or in a bad place. This can help you express your emotions and seek different perspectives on how you can deal with your concerns.
  • If you feel that you need professional help, you can always reach out to a queer affirmative therapist who can help you with your concerns.

The small steps that we take for ourselves can have a huge impact on the betterment of our lives. To quote many in the community: you choose when and how you express yourself. You do not need to come out to be part of the community. You are valid. And it is absolutely okay, even necessary, to put yourself first and take care of yourself.

Happy Pride Month!
